Students can sign up for band class starting in 6th grade. Band is an elective class, students are instructed in wind or percussion instruments. All you need to do is sign your child up for band class when choosing your electives at RMS.
Required Materials :
A working instrument, accessories for that instrument (reeds, valve oil, etc.), band book: Habits of a Successful Musician
6th grade: Habits of a Successful Beginner Musician / 7/8 grade - Habits of a Successful Middle School Musician
A good attitude!
Mr. Ayers tests each student on what instrument they would like to focus on: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, or percussion. He will help them find an instrument that suits their needs This typically happens the first few weeks of school once they start class.
Band class meets like any regular class during the school day every day. We typically have 2 performances for 6th grade band; a Winter Concert and a Spring Concert.
Students start band class in 6th grade and continue throughout middle and high school (if they choose). Any student in 7th grade who did not participate in 6th grade band will need to discuss joining with the director.
Students establish a foundation of musical skills in grades 6 and 7 in posture, hand position, tone production, reading music and rhythms, and other skills related to instrumental music.
Students are strongly encouraged to rent or purchase their instruments, but please wait in 6th or 7th grade until instruments have been assigned. You will be fit for the right instrument and given a choice that fits you best.
