August 24, 2009

Dear Band Parent,

I have decided to do something a little different for our “normal” Spring activity, which has traditionally been a day-trip to Kings Dominion or Busch Gardens. I am making plans for the band trip to Washington, D.C. The date of the trip will be Saturday, March 27, 2010. The primary purpose of this trip is to hear the National Symphony Orchestra perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Additionally, we will visit the Smithsonian Museums and take a tour of the U.S. Capital Building. This is a wonderful educational opportunity both musically and from a historical perspective.

The tentative itinerary for this trip will look something like this:

> Depart from Rustburg H.S. Bandroom – 6:00 am (Saturday, 3/27/2010)
> Tour of the Capital Building (tentative – Time TBA)
> Visit Smithsonian Museums – 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
Museums located at the Mall include the National Archives, Arts & Industries Museum, National Museum of American History, Natural History Museum, National Air & Space Museum, Hirshhorn Museum, National Museum of African Art, Sackler Gallery, Freer Gallery, American Indian Museum, National Gallery of Art.
> Lunch is on your own at one of the museums’ food centers
> Depart to Phillips Harbor Buffet Restaurant for Dinner – 5:15 pm
A buffet dinner which includes soup and salad station, traditional seafood, steamed seafood, fried chicken, assorted vegetables, carving stations, assorted desserts, beverages and much more. Dinner begins at 5:45 pm.
> Depart for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts – 7:00 pm
> National Symphony Orchestra performance – 8:00 pm
> Depart for Rustburg following performance – 10:30 pm
> Arrive at Rustburg H.S. Bandroom – 2:30 am (Sunday, 3/28/2010)

Costs included in the price of the trip are: 1. Tickets for the NSO performance; 2. Charter bus transportation (at current fuel prices); and 3. Dinner at Phillips Harbor Buffet Restaurant. The cost of this trip is anticipated to be: $135.00. An initial payment is necessary to state your intent to attend this trip AND to reserve your symphony ticket. Your down-payment should be turned in to Mr. Straw no later than September 15th. Checks are to be made payable to: Rustburg High School.

PAYMENT DATES ARE: Payment 1 of $50.00 due by September 15, 2009
Payment 2 of $50.00 due by November 30, 2009
Payment 3 of $35.00 due by February 1, 2010

The trip/concert date is on Saturday, March 27, 2010, which is the Saturday before Palm Sunday. Money for this event cannot be refunded due to the lengthy time that symphony ticket reservations must be made. While we will be attending the Capital Building tour, dinner, and the concert as a group, I plan on having students traveling in groups with adult (parent/grand parent) chaperone(s) at the Smithsonian Museums. Students will be able to choose their groups one to two months prior to this trip. Groups should decide which museums they wish to attend prior to departure. I must have an adequate number of chaperones for student supervision throughout this trip. Please carefully consider if this opportunity interests you and your child.

This trip will be separate from all fund-raising activities of the Band Boosters. Student points earned will not be used for this educational event and financial payments will be deposited and paid through Rustburg High School.

Please return this form with the names of the trip participants with payment 1 of $50.00 per person (payable to: RUSTBURG HIGH SCHOOL) to Mr. Straw on or before TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15.
